The crystal features a detailed 3D laser-engraved representation of the Perseverance rover descending towards the Martian surface using NASA’s Sky Crane system, capturing the final moments of its extraordinary landing sequence.

On 18 February 2021, NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully landed inside Jezero Crater after completing the famous “seven minutes of terror”: an autonomous entry, descent and landing sequence that took the spacecraft from interplanetary speeds to a controlled touchdown on Mars.

Perseverance was designed to explore the geology and past environment of Mars, search for signs of ancient microbial life and collect and store samples of Martian rock and soil for potential future study.

The mission also carried Ingenuity, the small experimental helicopter that achieved the first powered, controlled flight on another planet.
